Information on Gastric Banding

Results...

Several clinical trials have been done to assess the results of Laparoscopic Adjustable Gastric Banding surgery. Of important note is that results indicate percentage of excess weight lost. For example, if your ideal weight is 70kg and you weigh 120kg, a loss of 50% of your excess weight will mean that you lose 25kg and end up weighing 95kg.

Five studies have documented the results of Laparoscopic Adjustable Gastric Banding surgery. All studies showed over 50% excess weight loss over 5 years. The results are summarised below:

1 2 3 4 5
Number of patients 709 763 500 543 830
Average Age 41 36 39 41 38
Average starting BMI 45 42 43 44 46
Follow up time (years) 5 5 2 5 5
% Excess Weight Loss 54 50-60 65 53
Average Final BMI 30 31.2 36
